Catching Up - Part 3

Updated: Mar 27

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

This last post in the 3-part series is all Bolsa Chica - Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve -near Huntington Beach. There is always something interesting to see and record there. The walkways and paths among the fresh and salt water wetlands there make for good walking exercise, engaged by many. I usually get 3-4 miles or more with my Canon R5 and RF 100-500 mm lens.

The gallery below was recorded in mid-March on 2 occasions. Some of the more interesting encounters included a coyote grudge match. One, clearly dominant, was harassing and attacking the other, which was collared and tagged for reasons unclear to me. Further research needed.

Also shown are a Marbled Godwit, Willet, Lesser Scaup, Horned Grebe, Red-shouldered Hawk, Ruddy Duck, Surf Scoter, Blue-grey Gnat Catcher, White and Brown Pelicans in formation, a Snowy Egret with its breakfast, a Peregrine Falcon perched for his cameo, and flocks of Elegant Terns being very active. Crazy video follows the gallery!

See if you can pick out who's who!

The Terns interrupted their noisy, frantic mingling every so often for a mass launch. I caught a couple of these with my camera. But the best one was in slow motion, as you will see when you click on the video below.
